CareerCast evaluates annually 200 jobs on the basis of stress, workplace environment, growth prospects and pay. The X-Y graph on the right arrays them by salary and job score. Many fall below the median household income of $65K. And many high paying jobs have poor (high) scores. The one in the upper right is surgeon; demanding workplace and abundant stress. Of the 20 best scoring jobs, all pay above the median household income. That means the family can probably be comfortable with just one wage earner.
And all of the 20 best require a college degree or higher. Interestingly, only seven require a long stretch of graduate study.
